With "Creative × Seongsu 2026," Seongdong-gu turned all of Seongsu-dong into a single district-sized stage, and for once the host is not a brand or a mall but the local government itself.

The programme folds an art fair, music, fashion, beauty, film and webtoon together with dining and walking tours, spread across the streets rather than boxed into a venue. Around it, October's wave of Seongsu pop-ups — idol-character tie-ins, local makers, anime, festival collaborations — slots into the same few blocks, so a visitor crossing the neighbourhood moves from one brand encounter to the next without ever stepping indoors. The district lays the grid; the brands light it up.

Why it matters: Seongsu has spent several years becoming Seoul's default proving ground, the place a brand goes to be seen. What is new is who is doing the opening. When a district government — not a department store, not a single label — decides to turn its streets into the arena, it changes what a neighbourhood is for. The pop-ups were always coming; the city choosing to host them, route them and brand the whole thing as one event is the move that turns a cluster of stores into a civic stage. That is a precedent other Seoul districts, and other cities, will read closely.
